Richard Cobden
1804-1865

A successful Manchester Industrialist and leading figure in the free trade movement in Britain from 1836, together with john Bright he led the Anti Corn Law League in the successful campaign for repeal of the corn laws in1846.(protectionist measure to support our farmers by import tariffs) Cobden had become an MP for Stockport in 1841 and continued as a political reformer until his death. He was opposed to the Crimean War 1854-65. Negotiated a trade agreement with the French, signed in 1860.
